The Scottish Women’s Rights Centre (SWRC) is expanding and JustRight Scotland (JRS) are seeking two female solicitors and two female caseworkers to join the SWRC team. The SWRC is a unique collaborative project which aims to improve outcomes for women in Scotland who have experienced gender-based violence, bringing together the expertise of Rape Crisis Scotland, the University of Strathclyde Law Clinic and our experienced team of human rights lawyers at JRS.

Solicitors

JRS are seeking two talented and dynamic female lawyers for new posts within the SWRC. If successful, you will be employed by JRS within a team of solicitors and caseworkers working with women across Scotland. You will also work with our SWRC partners.

Solicitor for expansion in the North of Scotland: funded by the Scottish Government and based in Glasgow, the successful solicitor for this post will enable the SWRC to expand its existing legal services to the north of Scotland through outreach work (in person and through use of technology), and the delivery of training and awareness raising. This will begin in Dundee with future expansion to cover Aberdeen, and the Highlands and Islands. The solicitor will also deliver advice and information through the SWRC helplines and legal representation in line with strategic objectives of the SWRC. Experience in family law is essential for this post.

Specialist Sexual Harassment Solicitor: funded by the Justice and Equality Fund from Rosa, the successful solicitor for this post will operate the SWRC’s new sexual harassment legal service. The successful solicitor will deliver this service through helplines, outreach, and direct legal representation with a focus on cases of sexual harassment and abuse, particularly in employment and further education and including online spaces, in line with strategic objectives of the SWRC. The solicitor will also assist the SWRC to develop and deliver training and resources on these issues. Experience in employment law is essential for this post.

These are exciting new posts in challenging and varied roles which will include the opportunity to contribute to the development of the law and practice in Scotland through policy, training, research work and strategic litigation.

Candidates must have experience in litigation, human rights, tackling gender inequality and working to achieve social justice. These roles would be suitable for newly qualified solicitors.

Salary £34,400 (employer pension contribution of 5%)
Contract 5 days (35 hours) per week

Caseworkers

JRS are seeking two female caseworkers to work under the supervision of SWRC solicitors to assist its solicitors with its frontline outreach and legal casework as well as its work in pubic legal education, training, research and policy. This will include the following: undertaking legal, administrative and finance casework tasks in a variety of legal matters; providing advice and rights-based information directly to women through SWRC helplines; social media, drafting human rights information and other resources for the SWRC public legal education programme; organisation of professional training; inputting into policy and influencing work; and may include the opportunity to provide assistance at court and tribunal hearings.

A degree is essential, a law degree preferred, as is a demonstrable interest in human rights, tackling gender inequality and social justice.

These posts provide a unique opportunity for individuals to gain experience in gender and human rights based legal practice, including strategic litigation, and would be of interest to people seeking to go on to work within the social justice sector.
